Is kale good for your skin?
When kale season begins again, there are many reasons to include kale in your diet more often if you want to do something good for your skin!
The bright green color of kale is due to its high chlorophyll content (230 mg per 100 g), making it the leader among green leafy vegetables. In this way, kale supports the formation of red blood pigment and helps our skin cells get more oxygen. Chlorophyll is also very helpful in detoxification because it binds chemicals and removes them from the body.
Kale is also a real benefit for your intestines because it provides nutrition for the good intestinal bacteria in the form of valuable fiber. The green leafy vegetable belongs to the cabbage family and is low in calories but contains anti-inflammatory omega-3 fatty acids and plant protein. Kale is also highly alkaline and a real nutrient bomb with a high content of vital substances such as calcium, iron, potassium, magnesium, vitamins C, E and K.
Particularly noteworthy is the antioxidant beta-carotene, which is converted into vitamin A by the body. The mustard oil contained in sulforaphane also has an antioxidant effect and also has an antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and detoxifying effect. The antioxidant flavonoids kaempferol and quercetin help your skin absorb vitamin C and support your skin’s natural production of collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid. All of these antioxidants protect us from cell damage caused by free radicals and prevent cell degeneration and skin aging.
To get the full antioxidant effect of kale, it is best to consume it raw in a salad or smoothie or only blanch it briefly, as heat destroys many of the valuable ingredients.
